WEDDING ATTIRE – IDEAS FOR THE GROOM

Tips and fashion ideas for groomswear

Much like a wedding dress, there are many different options for the groom. The type of wedding attire may depend on the style of the wedding venue you’ve chosen. An elegant mansion wedding venue may suit black tie, but a lounge suit may be more appropriate for a rustic barn wedding venue.

Chat about options as a couple and consider shopping as a couple too! Below is a selection of fashion ideas for the groom.

Morning suit

A popular choice for a formal wedding, this traditionally consists of grey striped trousers, a black, grey, or navy single-breasted tailcoat, wing collar shirt, waistcoat, silk tie or cravat, and sometimes a top hat. A morning suit is ideal for a church wedding and will look forever timeless in your wedding photos.

Lounge suit

Appropriate for a contemporary wedding; splash out on a designer suit. Modern grooms can choose from a range of stylish lounge suits, in a variety of colours. Accessorise with shoes, pocket squares, socks, and ties to complete the look.

Black tie

A glamorous choice; men wear a dinner jacket and trousers, a white shirt and black bow tie. Black tie wedding attire is ideal for an evening wedding, a super glamorous wedding venue, or a New Year’s Eve wedding. Groom Ryan chose to wear black tie on his wedding day. Click here to see his style.

Military uniform

A member of the armed forces will usually wear their military uniform. This super-smart outfit will look amazing in your wedding photographs and will keep the groom feeling comfortable in his own style.

Highland dress

Scottish grooms will cut a stylish dash in a complete Highland morning or evening dress. Perfect if you want to introduce Scottish culture to your wedding.

Frock coat

Quite a flamboyant look, these can be plain, patterned brocade, velvet, or silk. These generally reach down to mid-thigh and are worn with a standard or Nehru-style collar.

Personalised wedding suit

Top tip:

If you’re buying a new suit, why not have the inner pocket personalised with the date of your wedding?

Where to shop for groomswear?

Grooms-to-be are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding the perfect suit for your wedding. You can opt to hire or buy your suit, but don’t leave shopping until the last minute. If you are ordering, you may need to be fitted several times, and if you have ushers up and down the country, you may need to organise them early. Here are some ideas on where to shop:

  • The high street: Shops such as Moss Bros and M&S offer a wide range of wedding wear for men. Traveling to a larger town or city will give you a wider choice, with well-known brands offering a range of lounge suits in different colours and cool accessories.
  • Local specialist suit hire stores: These shops will know what they are talking about when it comes to wedding suit hire. Why not go there and start trying on some different styles to see what you prefer. They’ll stock the full outfit, all sizes, and have all the accessories to hire too.
  • Department stores: Major department stores may have their own suiting division.
  • Bespoke tailors: If you want a wedding suit made bespoke, try to get a recommendation from a friend who used a specialist tailor for their wedding, and make sure you leave plenty of time!
