UNIQUE WEDDING RECEPTION ENTERTAINMENT IDEAS

Unique ideas to keep your wedding guests entertained while you’re having those all-important photographs taken

When considering entertainment for your wedding, arguably it’s more important to keep your guests entertained throughout the day, when they’re more likely to be waiting around whilst you’re off having photographs taken, compared to the evening reception.

There are plenty of options to choose from but it is important that you research what is right for your day in terms of style and budget. Below, we’ve provided a few popular ideas to give you a head start when it comes to choosing unique entertainment.

Interactive wedding guest book

Rather than have your guests sign a traditional style wedding guest book, consider hiring an interactive wedding book specialist where guests can record their message for you, rather than write it. Fun for all and something that your wedding guests may not have seen before.

Marryoke

Marryoke wedding videos are typically acted out by the newlywed couple and the bridal party – but if you’re looking for a unique idea to get all of your guests involved and having fun during your wedding reception, Marryoke could be your answer. Choose the perfect song and perhaps pre-warn your guests, so that they can start to familiarise themselves with the song.

Look-alikes

The idea of hiring a celebrity look-alike isn’t for everybody but it is a good way of guests breaking the ice and provides an interesting twist to your reception. From Johnny Depp charming the ladies to David Beckham serving your drinks, you have plenty of options to choose from that will fit in with the rest of your day. Guests will certainly enjoy taking a selfie with their favourite A-lister!

Caricaturists

A unique and fun form of entertainment is the caricaturist. Have an artist sketch a comic likeness of your guest in roughly 5 – 10 minutes and they’ll have a keepsake from the day and will talk about it for the rest of the night! Other guests will get curious and watch the caricaturist work his magic.

Entertainment trends

Some wedding trends come and go, but the following ideas seem to be here for the long-run

Photo booths

Photo booths never date. Everyone loves to put on a silly hat or over-sized sun glasses to pose for a funny photograph. There are various varieties of photo booths available for your wedding these days. Most can produce a strip or college of photos for you to pop in to a guest book too. Check out our Harper partners section for photo booth suppliers we’ve worked with in the past.

Singing waiters

Add an element of surprise and hire singing waiters to serenade your guests during the meal. Posing as real staff dressed in the same uniform and working alongside the rest of the team, your guests won’t suspect a thing until they spontaneously leap into song. Repertoire can be selected by yourselves beforehand so you can be sure the music suites your taste.

Sweetie tables

Appealing to the inner child in everyone, the sweetie cart trend is still going strong. Display your favourite treats in glass jars or bowls with scoops and provide cute striped sweetie bags with personalised monogram stickers to seal them up for your guests to take home and enjoy!

Vintage trikes

Previously we’ve had ice-cream trikes, Pimms trikes, lemonade trikes and crepe trikes to name but a few. But, over time this list has gotten longer.
With the vintage vibe still being a strong influence on the UK wedding scene, the food and drink trike doesn’t appear to be dying out any time soon.

Magicians

We’re not talking the ‘pull a rabbit out of a hat’ type of magic here; many modern magicians perform illusions and close-up personal magic tricks that are guaranteed to leave your guests utterly speechless. This is a great form of entertainment during your drinks reception or during your wedding breakfast; going round your guests table to table to ensure nobody misses a thing!

Top tips: Planning your wedding reception entertainment

  • Check to see if your chosen wedding venue can recommend any particular suppliers that they may have worked with in the past
  • Ensure your chosen ideas are within your wedding budget
  • Book suppliers in advance – especially if you’ve secured a popular summer wedding date
  • Read supplier reviews online before you book them
  • Get your timings right
  • Consider the weather if you plan on booking entertainment for outdoor
  • If your entertainment includes food and drink, ensure that your venue permits this, or can provide it themselves
